AIDS Awareness Day Today
LANSING -- The Michigan Department of Community Health has kicked off its 6th annual Black AIDS Awareness Campaign. The six-week campaign runs through March 15th. Michigan Department of Community Health's Debra Szwejda says the campaign used to be limited to one day, National Black AIDS Awareness Day on February 1st.
But because of the disproportioned burden that AIDS in Michigan has on African Americans, the campaign was expanded to six Szwejda says while African Americans make up only 14% of Michigan’s population, they represent 60% of the people living with HIV/AIDS Szwejda says there are events marking the campaign all across the state.
